The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program designed to provide essential dental care services to eligible Canadians, including families, seniors, and individuals. With dental care costs often being a barrier for many, the CDCP ensures access to necessary treatments for those who qualify. People with access to private dental insurance or coverage, for example through work, a pension or a family member’s plan, do not qualify for the CDCP. Dental coverage through a government social program does not by itself prevent you from qualifying. But what exactly does the CDCP cover, and how can it benefit you? Let’s dive into the details of this program in our comprehensive 2025 guide.

Why Was the CDCP Introduced?

Dental care plays a vital role in overall health; however, many Canadians face limited access due to high expenses. To address this issue, the Canadian government launched the CDCP to improve oral health care and offer coverage for essential dental services. This federal government program is designed to support people with an adjusted family net income below $90,000 who have no access to private dental insurance. By addressing these financial barriers, the CDCP aims to create a healthier, more inclusive Canada. The initiative not only improves access to necessary treatments but also promotes long-term oral health care, fostering a community where dental wellness is attainable for all eligible residents.

Do You Qualify for CDCP in 2026?

As of 2026, the CDCP is now fully open to all eligible Canadians regardless of age, no longer limited to seniors or children. You qualify if you meet all four eligibility criteria:

Canadian Resident You (and your spouse or common-law partner, if you have one) must be Canadian residents for tax purposes.

Filed Your Taxes You (and your spouse or common-law partner, if you have one) must have filed a 2025 tax return in Canada to qualify for 2026–27.

Income Under $90K Your adjusted family net income is the relevant income level and must be below $90,000.

No Private Insurance No access to employer, pension, or private dental coverage.

Note: If your spouse has dental coverage through their employer, you may not qualify, because the CDCP is meant to provide coverage only for people without access to other plans.

Some provincial dental programs may still exist separately and do not automatically replace CDCP rules.

How to Get Started with CDCP at Dentistry on Guelph

Applications for the 2026–2027 benefit year are open.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility (opens in a new tab) Confirm you meet all four requirements: Canadian resident, 2025 taxes filed, family income under $90K, no access to private dental insurance. Check on Canada.ca.

Step 2 : Apply or Renew Online New applicants: applications for the 2026–2027 benefit period are open at canada.ca. Existing members: the 2026 renewal period closed on June 1, 2026; renewals for 2027–2028 open in spring 2027 through My Service Canada Account (MSCA) or by phone. Have your SIN and 2025 Notice of Assessment ready.

Step 3: Receive Your CDCP Card from Sun Life Once approved, Sun Life (administrator of CDCP) will send your benefits card and coverage letter by mail. This confirms your coverage tier and co-payment percentage.

Step 4: Book Your Appointment at Dentistry on Guelph Call us or book online. Bring your CDCP card and photo ID. We bill Sun Life directly for the part CDCP pays. You pay any co-payment that applies and the cost of any service CDCP does not cover; we explain these before treatment.

CDCP Dental Services Covered in 2026

CDCP covers a broad range of essential dental treatments. Some procedures require pre-authorization from Sun Life before starting.

Covered Services:

  • Dental exams and consultations
  • X-rays (diagnostic imaging)
  • Teeth cleanings (scaling)
  • Fillings (amalgam and composite)
  • Tooth extractions
  • Root canals (standard treatment needs no pre-authorization; re-treatment and third molars do)
  • Dentures (partial and full)
  • Emergency dental care
  • Periodontal treatment (gum care)

❌ Not Covered:

  • Teeth whitening and bleaching
  • Veneers (cosmetic)
  • Orthodontics and braces (currently not available under the CDCP)
  • Cosmetic bonding
  • Dental implants, bridges and all related procedures
  • Other services CDCP does not cover (we explain any separate charge before treatment)

Pre-authorization required for: crowns, partial dentures (first placement), complete overdentures and complete dentures with long-term soft liners, root canal re-treatment and root canals on third molars, and services above the usual frequency limits. Standard complete dentures, and standard root canals on front teeth, premolars and first and second molars, do not need it. Implants and bridges are excluded and cannot be approved through pre-authorization.

Cost and Payment for CDCP Services

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government initiative aimed at improving access to dental care for eligible Canadian residents, and most dental insurance plans help reduce out-of-pocket costs for essential dental care. While the program significantly reduces financial barriers, it’s important to understand that treatments under the CDCP may not be entirely free. Patients might need to pay a portion of their dental appointment costs, known as co-payments. Dental plans in Canada also often involve premiums and co-insurance, while the CDCP instead uses income-based cost sharing for eligible patients. The co-payment amount is determined by the patient’s adjusted family net income:

  • Income under $70,000: 0% co-payment (100% coverage)
  • Income between $70,000 and $79,999: 40% co-payment (60% coverage)
  • Income between $80,000 and $89,999: 60% co-payment (40% coverage)

CDCP members must renew their coverage every year. The renewal period for the 2026–2027 benefit year closed on June 1, 2026, and renewals for the 2027–2028 benefit year will open in spring 2027. Before renewing, you (and your spouse or common-law partner, if you have one) must have filed your tax return for the previous year and received your Notice of Assessment. Renewals are done online through My Service Canada Account (MSCA) or by phone.

  • Renewal Deadline: The 2026 renewal period closed on June 1, 2026. If you missed it, you can submit a new application, but dental care received during the gap in coverage is not covered.
  • Renewal Methods: Renewals can be completed online through My Service Canada Account or by phone.

CDCP does not make all dental care free. Depending on your adjusted family net income, you may pay a co-payment, and services CDCP does not cover are charged separately. At Dentistry on Guelph, we charge covered services at the CDCP established fee, with no extra fees above it, and we explain any co-payment or separate charge before treatment. Additionally, the CDCP is not intended to replace existing dental coverage. Canadians should maintain their current dental insurance, as dropping or declining private dental coverage does not make you eligible for the CDCP.

Why Patients Find Us

  1. Am I eligible for CDCP in 2026 if my family income is $75,000? If you meet the other three requirements (no access to private dental insurance, a tax return filed in Canada and Canadian residency for tax purposes), yes. An adjusted family net income of $75,000 is in the $70,000–$79,999 tier, so you pay a 40% co-payment. CDCP covers 60% of eligible fees.
  2. Best CDCP dentist near me in Guelph accepting new patients 2026? Dentistry on Guelph is a participating CDCP provider accepting new patients for the 2026–27 benefit year.
  3. Does CDCP cover root canals and dentures in 2026? Yes, both are covered. Standard root canal treatment on front teeth, premolars and first and second molars does not need pre-authorization; re-treatment and root canals on third molars do. For dentures, it depends on the type: partial dentures (first placement), overdentures and dentures with long-term soft liners need pre-authorization through Sun Life, and standard complete dentures do not. Your income sets your co-payment, not whether a service is approved.
  4. What happens if I miss the CDCP renewal deadline in 2026? Coverage ends June 30, 2026. Dental care received during the gap is not reimbursed. Applications for the 2026–2027 benefit period are open, so you can submit a new application.

We have been coming to this dental clinic for over three years, and ever since we found them, they have been our family's go to dental office.

Even though we live outside of Guelph and have to travel quite a distance, we gladly make the trip because we are so happy with the care and service we receive.

Dr. Mozhgan and Dr. Reza are both highly professional, caring, and knowledgeable. They always take the time to explain everything clearly and make us feel comfortable.

The front desk team is also amazing. They are always welcoming, friendly, and helpful, making every visit a pleasant experience.

We truly appreciate the outstanding care and highly recommend this clinic to anyone looking for an excellent dental team.

Had a dental emergency on a Saturday and after reading reviews felt like this was the best office to try to get in asap. They were able to book me an appt for 90 min after my call. Every single staff member made an effort to greet me, introduce themselves and made me feel at ease. They took X-rays and diagnosed the issue very quickly. X-rays were emailed to me so I could send to my regular dentist (who is on holiday) if I choose Also gave rx and recommended best next steps. In and out in under 30 min. Excellent service and care.
